The cushions are thick enough to be comfortable as well. If this chair is going to be exposed to the elements, you will need a cover. The manufacturer also recommends that it not be left outside in freezing temperatures. That makes sense to me, although the woven fibers of this chair feel to have some kind of protective coating. Fast forward to present day and I've just received a third set of 2 chairs because after enlarging our deck we finally have room enough for a table and because these chairs have stood up so well we decided to not buy a dining set and, instead, just buy a new table to go with these chairs. The only downside so far is that the original chairs' cushions are lighter now than the last pair of chairs we bought. I'm not sure if it is the same fabric or if they have faded in the sunlight. I personally like slighly tilted back rest, and these chairs have a perfect angle: you don't have to recline too much but neither you have to sit straight.
