This Quarter wine barrel planter is designed to be placed against any kind of wall or structure allowing you to accentuate your garden. This barrel planter is built using an oak wood wine barrel that has been cut in half horizontally, and then in half again vertically. We then use cedar to build a new back and bottom, using the tongue and groove method. If you plan to use the wine barrels for planting, then drainage holes are needed, so excess water may drain out of the containers without drowning and killing the plants. These whiskey barrel planters are great. Our family has had three more just like them for 16 years. One is used as a small water feature with a bamboo fountain and the other two as traditional planters. Because of the size and material the soil does not dry out too quickly. For these two new ones, I've converted them into self-watering planters using sturdy 22 inch saucers and 1/2 inch solid-braid nylon rope for wicking the water up into the soil.
