The front lip on the floating shelf can prevent items from falling off or sliding forward.

The shelves look beautiful but they have two limitations: (1) They are unfinished, i.e., no varnish or lacquer! Some brown stain rubs off when wiped with a damp cloth. (2) The keyhole mounts are cut into the wood rather than attached with metal brackets. The included plastic wallboard anchors have thick flanges so, despite pounding, the flanges protrude slightly and the back of the shelves don't fit flush against the wall.
