Most of the assembly was easy, though getting the footboard spindles to line up and fall into place in the lower rail was a challenge. I am ultimately happy with it and it does what I need. There is a lengthy construction process with 44 steps and a tone of screws; i definitely benefited from gentle use of a power drill for some steps while others needed to be done by hand. there is one type of diagram - that shows how to install the sliding tracks that is initially very hard to interpret. but taking my time and having a second pair of hands for the first half of construction made it work and its more or less exactly what I wanted for the space. eventually when I habe a bigger budget I would prefer hardwood but this is a reasonable solution for a small space. This bed is very cute, but earns a four for the way it goes together. Not the sturdiest design on the center join where two frame pieces meet in the middle. It's adequate, but could be designed better. The design side of the footboard should face toward the room and not to the interior of the bed. The three holes were pre-drilled on the non-decorative side so if you flip it, there are only two holes and not a space for the peg that serves as a place-holder while joining the footboard to the rail so it is more difficult to assemble.
