The switch is a rotary type. The shades were easy to assemble, but the metal rings are not covered like they would be in a pre-assembled shade. It does not and is simply a reflection of the light from the bulb/room. If you carefully review the pictures, you will note that when the light is off, the base is a slightly darker blue color.
