The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. This is a really nice coffee table. Quite sturdy and well made. I got the darker finish and it’s well done. Pictures don’t do it justice . The storage is substantial.
