The beaded edges are approximately 3/4" thick and 3/4" tall to keep items in place. There is 6.75" of open space between the tiers. I was shocked at how easy it was to assemble these stands, and I love that there are two of them! Poorly made. Comes disassembled. It will not go together tight the way it is designed. The wing nut on the bottom cannot be tightened enough to make the piece stable. I had to find and add a washer to the bottom in order to make it stable. After doing that you will notice that all the shelves are crooked. It also didn't sit level from the feet on the bottom.
