The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This craft table is a perfect addition to my craft room. Delivery was great. The package was very heavy and you need 2 people to lift the box. It took me 3 days to put together because there were so many parts. I wish they had wooden dowels instead of plastic. I should’ve used glue because they kept falling out. I didn’t put the doors on because I liked the open shelves. I did not put the top on so it would fold out because I didn’t have room so just kept it folded. Everything works great! OK..Well I went back and forth with cabinets...Studied them all for days, and tried to remove the ones I found that were metal. I wanted 6 shelves, and these were taller than the rest and matched the Wonston Porter drawers that I purchased days before, so I thought they would be the same. BUT THEY ARE METAL.
