Stars cut from steel, stripes made of wood, and room for two on the front porch. This Backyard Expressions bench carries the flag in its backrest: a black steel panel with the stars cut through it sits at the top corner, and stained wood slats run beside and below it as the stripes. Because the flag is built from the materials themselves rather than painted on, it stays understated enough for every day and still unmistakable on the Fourth of July. The seat is made of the same stained wood slats, with the grain showing through, and curved armrests finish each end. Underneath, a black steel frame with braced legs is rated to hold up to 500 pounds, so two adults can sit together comfortably. At just under four feet wide, it fits beside a front door, along a garden walkway, on a deck or in an entryway, and at about 32 pounds it moves easily when you want to rearrange. Everything ships in one box with the hardware and instructions, and it bolts together at home in a few steps. To keep it looking good, wipe the wood with a dry cloth, and bring it under cover or out of standing water through the wettest part of the year. It makes a thoughtful gift for a veteran, a housewarming or anyone who keeps a flag by the door.
