Because the designer omitted a drain hole, between uses, I empty the ash and turn the bowl upside down to prevent rain from collecting in the bowl. Wow! I feel sorry for the other guys that are drawn to the inferior pits that are offered here. There are a few that match quality materials and style. Very few exceed it though. It is smaller than many other pits however, there are larger cast iron pits but costing much more! Our pit will fit our cozy corner in my garden nicely. The grate is solid and unlike many other pits, it requires a rocket scientist to assemble. So don’t be fooled by the fancy unnecessary add ons , and don’t get attached by the fine finishes offered. You will be replacing both soon enough with your next pit! Fire pits are supposed to look like this iron pit which will age gracefully and rust won’t claim it any time soon. Buy a cover for 15 bucks and you’re gold. Don’t let an added cover sway you to an inferior piece. Or don’t be led to a pit with a added poker. Use a stick!! We've really enjoyed this and gotten a lot of use out of it - in all seasons! It did start to rust after a few months, but it was nothing a coat of Rustoleum could not fix.
