The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The first desk took us about 5 hours, and even knowing exactly what we were doing, the second still took about 4 hours. I would absolutely recommend having two people, plenty of space, and a whole lot of patience. That being said, the instruction manual was surprisingly clear and helpful. There are simply a LOT of pieces and steps involved. Once assembled, though Worth it. They look like much more expensive pieces of furniture and completely transformed our homeschool room. I especially love all of the drawers, cabinets, shelving, and built-in desktop outlets. If you’re willing to survive the assembly process, I highly recommend them. It has more style with the sliding drawers, costs a lot less, but did not come with a separate file cabinet like the 1st, but do not need it as this one has 2 file drawers. And the best part, is it has a electric recepitcal on the top of the desk for a lamp or another appliance if needed. And it fits in my ensuite walk-in closet (which is my little craft room). I really like the desk. I've got all my books and art supplies in the hutch as well as a few vain trinkets on display up on the highest shelf with more space for storage throughout. The seven desk drawers fit just about everything I could need within arm's reach. Desk itself is sturdy, it doesn't shake around while I'm writing, doesn't feel flimsy and there are adjustable feet at the bottom to level it out. I ordered this hutch to put on top of my husbands very large desk for the purpose of decluttering the desk. It is high quality and pretty heavy. I have purchased other furniture items from Wayfair and although it takes a few hours to put together, it is very worth the savings.
