The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Very easy to put together! My husband and I assembled it in about two hours after spending a half hour organizing all the parts. I highly recommend watching the assembly video on the Grain Wood Furniture website—the video is for the two-door armoire, but it’s very similar and helpful. We’ve assembled quite a few pieces of furniture, and this one is exceptionally well made. We did make one mistake by using the wrong screw, so be sure to pay close attention to the directions.
