At dusk, they literally pop up and light up, giving you lights along a pathway, driveway, deck, or dock that aren't in your way during the day. Prior to first use, charge the light for two sunny days. If battery capacity reduces over time, switch the light off for 3-5 sunny days in order to boost the batteries. These solar lights are beautiful but I have tried and tried to remove the plastic cover off the solar panel area on one of them. I even read that I could use warm water and that did not work. I also read you can warm it up with a blow dryer and that did not work. I am being extra careful to not damage the surface. Edit despite being cheaply made they really do put off a nice flame like glow. For that we love them. One was broken when I opened the package. They are very cheaply made.
