The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This cabinet is awesome!! Unfortunately my sewing machine with the dust cover doesnt fit on the under side shelf but Ive got in its carrier bag and that fits on top just fine. I do love that it can configure in different ways and even L shape but it was exactly what we were looking for!
