The chair reclines if you lean back with pressure or by turning the knob underneath the seat. The footstool can be used 2 ways by turning it which is lovely when I need to rest my legs with added support. The chair was packaged so nicely. Each piece was wrapped carefully so there was no messy packaging Styrofoam when the box was opened. When I purchased this chair and ottoman it was on sale, a very good price for this product. After receiving the chair and ottoman, I now wish I had purchased two. It has a swivel base so it’s fun to move around. Also it’s a beautiful dark brown leather that goes well with my dark woods. It’s very easy to put together. The manual reclining lever is a little wobbly, even after tightening and it’s a little stiff so it takes a little work to get out of the reclining position but other than that this is a really amazing chair..
