In 18th-century Europe, Indian-dyed cloths known as Palampores were prized as hand-printed bed coverings and wall hangings. The inspiration for our pattern is a palampore featuring a flower-and-fruit-bearing serpentine tree emerging from a hillock with stylized peaks. Originally sourced to Sri Lanka, it was likely made for European communities in Batavia and Colombo, or for families of mixed European and Asian descent wishing to emulate Western taste. The Metropolitan Palampore print features an elemental design depicting a flower-and-fruit-bearing tree digitally printed on a cotton-and-linen blend. Our popular 19C, beautifully drawn English archival print of stately pheasants perched on a floral branch, now has an expanded color line. It was printed in England on a linen blended ground. Botany Bay has been used to make dramatic drapes and to cover occasional seating.

Palampore is the Hindi word for bed hanging and refers to Indian printed textiles created for bed draperies in the eighteenth century. Such bed hangings were highly prized and featured a tree of life design with abundant flowers and pomegranates. Our new interpretation of this classic and graceful pattern is embroidered in colorful threads against a medium weight of linen.

This early twentieth-century hand block print was discovered in an English archive and has been reproduced using the original woodblocks, which were first cut and printed in July 1924. The multicolored design is composed of 40 separate blocks and requires 80 blocks to complete one full meter of printing, and 1120 per table length. Its charming scenic design of English country life is freshly interpreted in new colorations for today’s interiors. Its all-over pattern and crisp linen ground make it a great option for curtains, chair upholstery, and decorative accents in great rooms, libraries, and bedrooms.

Originally designed in 1945 for Gino's of Capri, a restaurant on the Upper East Side of New York City, Zebras features an animated sketch of two zebras prancing around politely placed arrows on top of a lively red color wallpaper.
