The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. Nice, it’s MDF so it’s obviously not meant to hold a lot of weight, but it looks nice, and seems like it will work nicely for light clothing, I put light t-shirts and leggings, and other smalllight clothing. I wouldn’t recommend for heavier clothing like jeans or similar, but also you probably wouldn’t be able to fit very many. The shelves hold more than the drawers. Cheap construction, but not at a cheap price. Accent trim wasn't nailed or tacked on completely, really low quality mdf board. The reason I bought this was the dimensions were perfect for a tight area. It will do for storing tablecloths and placemats for my table. Don't think this would stand up to use where you had to open it every day.
