When I opened the box all the screws and bolts were all over, and it was hastily packed. Seems like someone returned it and did not package it well. It also has a couple minor scratches. Got a pair to hold board games. Yes, they are metal (but could you expect wood this thin to be strong?) and are about the right size. Easy to put together for the most part, and I had no trouble getting holes to line up, but they do tend to rock/wobble just a bit. And there is a LOT of bright brass hardware that shows on the sides. Overall they are beautiful and are a great accessory to my living room. I only had one issue and that is with the very top piece that curves over the whole top. It was very challenging to put into place. The second time we were putting it into place, for the second one we got, it snapped even when my husband was carefully following the directions.
