The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Love love love this desk! I’ve had it for about 5 years now and it is a really solid piece of furniture and worth the money in my opinion. It has a ton of storage, a really nice roomy workspace for my two large screens, my laptop on a stand, and for papers and whatever else ends up scattered across my desk! And I love that I can keep my phone charger and another charger plugged in inside the top drawer, and the cord pass-through at the back of the desk is nice to help keep all those ugly cords organized and out of the way.
