A specially designed lock will prevent escape and the doors can be opened separately. This terrarium is fairly easy to assemble, and has lasted me a few years so far and continues to be a great home for one of my pets. We love this unit, it is gorgeous. Our bearded dragon is very happy. Not sure why the reviews are mixed/bad. It is very big so if placed on a small space it might look awkward. We love that the Bearder dragon has a lot of space to move around. I will suggest to the company instead of wood in the back to add glass or plexiglass, I will upgrade it later, I thought of it after putting together.
