We are pretty happy with the platform bed. Very protected in the box. The instructions were only pics, which was easy to understand. This rustic wood farmhouse platform bed is a great bed. It is very sturdy with the metal frame and would agree you do not need a box spring, but for dimension we decided to put both box spring and mattress on the bed. The wood has a very nice finish to it that makes it look like real walnut wood. However it is light weight and very easy for one person to move and position on their own. It also was very easy to assemble and only took about 20 minutes which is quite surprising for such a nice piece of structured furniture. Very happy with the bed. Looks great in our guest room. It is not as bright/reddish orange color as pictured but more brown but beautiful. It is very well made, solid wood and easy to put up but HEAVY. We did the white glove delivery and glad we did. You have two options on the bed rails. In standard position the part your mattress, springs etc sit on is 8" from the floor. You can flip the rails and the part it sits on is now 13" from the floor. We have gone with that option and using a solid support system (plywood or bunkie board) rather than the slats. This eliminates the need for box springs. With a 14.5 inch mattress the height from the floor is now 28 inches (add 1/2 inch for support system) and comes just above (by about 3 inches) the bottom of the solid part of headboard leaving no gap for your pillows, remotes, etc to slide through.
