The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. Pretty good. First it's made by Sauder. At least mine was and that's fine. They've been making good consumer assembled furniture for decades. The instructions were well written and easy to follow and even had a bit of humor. I appreciated that. I did have one problem. The to mount the drawer glides to were about 1/8 of an inch off either on the cabinet sides or the drawer, so the drawer was bumping the top when you tried to close it. Meh, easy fix but annoying.
