The battery compartment took forever to open and not knowing what the clasp inside looked like to force it made it harder. Its like Fort Knox or something. I dont have a lot of hand strength anymore but directions say to squeeze the opening and that doesnt work at least on mine. Its all black so hard to see but how can you squeeze and hold the item and grab the door to open it The part you push was flush with the hole well its hard to explain but I couldnt find the moving part. Finally got it and posted pics so maybe it helps someone else. When I closed it the tab stayed out a little and not flush again so it should be fine. Right away I loved its look. I had a vintage French rustic push peddle can that was really pretty but had a lot of issues. My first motion sensor can and I think my special adult kid will think its fun to throw away things so fingers crossed. This was a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a trash/recycling bin, but when you think of it as a piece of furniture...well, it's slightly more palatable. We've been using 2 bins, one for trash, the other for recycling for years but it was such a mess constantly all around and the look was just...unappealing...right in the middle of the action. So I saw this and decided to pay the price. I'm glad I did. This is an attractive piece that functions so well to contain the necessary. I love the touch lid; I'm not a fan of the foot levers as I have never seen one that has any longevity in anyone else's kitchen and that requires your bin to be floor level. The raised bin here is awesome; the handles make it so easy to move to sweep (when I do sweep lol). It fits under a standard height kitchen counter perfectly. The design of the lid allows the bin to be flush again the base cabinet and still function perfectly. I like the smaller sized bins inside as it forces us to take the garbage and recycling out more frequently because the stink usually builds before the bin is full in our household of two, so this functions better for us. Even in a larger household, if you keep the kitchen bins dedicated for just the kitchen, it should function well if you don't mind a more frequent chore, but if your household uses the kitchen trash as the main source of trash and you are a larger household, then you don't want this dual bin, you want the singular one.
