The chair seats are very comfortable as is and even more so with cushions -- the seats accommodate my existing cushions. The chair backs are a bit more upright than I had hoped, but they will be perfect for dining. If you are seeking chairs for reading / lounging, you might want something with a bit more slant or recline to the back. We love these. We purchased the 'green' color chairs (the color to me is like kermit the frog green). The are a little more light weight than I thought they would be, I hope they don't blow over in a strong wind. They seem really well constructed.
