Yes, it's particle board. Now that that's out of the way... I needed a thin and narrow book shelf for behind my daughter's closet door. This fits wonderfully. I assembled it myself in under 45 minutes. I recommend having a narrow Allen Wrench on hand as the one it came with was very sharp.
