I opted to fill it with water since it is easy to dump out to move inside for any kind of tropical storm or hurricane preparedness. There are so many positive things about this base. First of all, I love the fact that it is on sturdy casters and can roll easily around to move the umbrella effortlessly. The casters have two lockable wheels that are easy to unlock and lock. Secondly, there are two pole adapters to fit smaller diameter poles. My umbrella pole is 1.49”, so having a smaller insert helps hold my umbrella pole sturdy. Love it! It is heavy, as it says it is, and doesn't require filling with sand or water which is nice. The wheels on the one side make it easier to move when on a smooth surface (otherwise I just pick it up entirely). I love that it comes with 3 fillers to allow it to fit from a small to a large pole, great idea and design! The wheel on the side is nice to tighten it down to the pole so it stays put easily.
