The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The Leg and Shelf are well made of sturdy material, with no issues with wobble after locking down the wheels. This crafting table is on casters that lock/unlock which makes it easy to move without scratching the new floors but also stationary when needed. The sewing machine, cutting & pinning tools will fit on the shelves which are great for storage purposes and easy accessibility. This sewing table can be easily folded to 12" W and fits into a tight spot for storage. This folding table can not only be used for cutting fabric/designing patterns or as an extra workspace for craft projects but also can be used as a computer desk in the living room or dining room. I called to place my order. The representative was very helpful in our discussion about this and similar products as well as the delivery. I needed a different delivery date, she advised me on how to handle; and it worked perfectly. Putting the tables together did take several hours with two of us. We recommend at least two to put them together. We did read the instructions beforehand but did find a couple tasks that we did have to go back to. We recommend that when attaching the lift arm, to cover the opening to the base (taped piece of paper does the trick). This avoids any issue of losing a screw into the opening.
