A Soft Neutral Simplistic Square Design Vintage Verner Panton Scandinavian Shag Rug, Circa date: Mid 20th Century -The iconic artist Verner Panton brought his unique sense of color, form and the function of light, to the world of contemporary and Bauhaus or Scandinavian design, in the latter part of the 20th century. His main focus was on how lighting, form and color influence their surroundings. He specifically created vintage rugs and art pieces that would respond to the light in a room in a certain way. This unique soft colored vintage Shag rug is an example of his experimentation with design and light.

Verner Panton's innovative approach to artistry defined midcentury design. This vibrant textile is a Panton pattern known as Quadrat, sometimes spelled Kvadrat. It simply means "square." This pattern was popular from 1969 through 1974, and it became a part of several Panton ensembles and collections, including the popular Mira X series.

Verner Panton is an iconic midcentury designer whose work transformed the world of interior design during the 1960’s and through the 1970’s. His designs ushered in an era that would become known as the Panton Era. This era was characterized by bright, optimistic colors and use of highlight and shadow that gives the piece a three-dimensional effect.

This gorgeous Verner Panton textile is an iconic pattern that was created in 1969. This pattern is known and the Quadrat (Kvadrat) pattern. It was used in several collections through 1974, including the Mira X ensemble. Panton’s work defined an era. The Panton Era refers to a period in modern design that was dominated by simple forms and vivid, futuristic pieces. It would eventually influence contemporary styles, such as ultra-modern and minimalist.

This Verner Panton textile fabric, called "Quadrat", features three columns of duplicate squares, in alternating neutral colors. It is a deceptively simple concept upon first viewing. The squares, which are spaced apart proportionately, are inverted mirrors of each other. Whereas the top square fades from the lightest to the darkest colors, the bottom square is reversed and begins with the darkest to the lightest colors of the same palette. Using Panton’s trademark formula of a gradient spaced over eight lines, these colors are soft, earthy and clean. The background has a lighter feel which amplifies the colors of the squares. This textile’s composition is balanced, poised and sublime. Verner Panton was best known throughout his established career for pioneering futuristic and modern designs.

Verner Panton attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art and graduated in 1951. He would spend the first two years of his career creating Danish Modern furniture at the Arne Jacobsen architectural firm. However, he would soon launch his own design firm and would go on to become one of the most iconic designers of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a textile created in 1969 for his Décor I collection. The textile is called “Checkers II.”.

The intense, dramatic red color is the most prominent feature of this remarkable textile from Danish interior and furniture designer, Verner Panton. This textile is composed of individual shapes which combined, form other patterns within the same space and is appealing for its visual power and versatility. Nine circles exist within a red square, divided into three rows. Five of these circles use the darkest to lightest gradient and four circles use the inverted formula of the lightest to darkest colors. Collectively, these circles form additional shapes inside the frame. The four circles with the lightest colored outlines create a sort of cross shape, each one occupying the middle spots in the row. The circles with the darkest outlines create a kind of X shape.

Verner Panton was one of the most influential designers of the mid-20th century. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. From 1950-1952 he worked for the famous Danish architectural design firm, Arne Jacobsen. However, the relationship between Panton and Arne Jacobsen would be a troubled one.

Verner Panton vintage textile in grays features one of Panton’s most famous patterns, The Kurve (Curve). Three vertical rows of the curve pattern showcase eight curves each with the colors expanding from white to dark charcoal and shades of gray in between. The color variation in the curves is ombre-like and creates a sense of wave-like movement. The simple minimalist pattern sits on a light gray background and runs the full length of the textile.

This rug is a good value for the money The color is very neutral ivory and light beige tones. The textured design is what makes this rug look nice. The looped pile is low so it will not show tracking footprints or vacuuming markspaths. I am giving only 3 stars because some spots on the 8x10 rug show places where the woven loops are not tightly in place so it sort of looks like bare spots. It says hand-tufted but not hand woven which usually is a more expensive better quality rug. Compared to many other rugs I considered and looked at in all sorts of price points I ended up settling on this one that is a lot more budget friendly, as we own a cat that likes to scratch things with its front claws!
