We had to send the first one back as it did not come apart properly. The seat is one section but the backs come off for moving. It is still really long and may not fit through some stairways. Wayfair was excellent regarding the return. The guys who brought it took it away and another was delivered. We love the couch. We are 5'7" and 6'0" Our feet hang over the edge of the foot rest but it has not been an issue. It's just me and my husband so it is perfect. Don't know how I would feel about it if it was upright all the time. We always put our feet up. The back has a separate control to put the back in a more upright position.
