Checking occurs when the logs dry and the cells shrink causing the wood to split. This does not weaken the wood. Checking helps give cedar furniture its rustic beauty. We regret buying this furniture! The pre-drilled holes are misaligned making it impossible to put all the bolts in. Now we have to drill new holes. This is an issue with all the chairs and the bench. We purchased the mushroom stain which is a nice stain but the manufacturer did not apply a clear topcoat like polyurethane, polycrylic, or lacquer. You always apply this coating, especially for out door furniture! It prevents moisture from penetrating the surface, which helps protect against mold, mildew, and damage from oil and salt. The wood will rot without it! So not only do we need to drill new holes we have to apply a coating to this furniture as well.
