These are really nice curtains. The background is definitely white and the stripe that runs through them does vary between navy to a lighter denim to a very light gray, but for me that was perfect for my living room. The fabric is a fairly heavy cotton (and part polyester; but they have the feel of cotton for sure). I ordered 3 pairs, and all of my stripes lined up once I hung them (I noticed in the reviews that some people complained about that). I washed them according to the instructions and they came out perfectly with no shrinkage and after ironing they looked awesome. During the day they let plenty of light in the room, and at night they definitely provide privacy even though they are semi sheer. I highly recommend these and I am extremely happy with my purchase.. I like these curtains but I knocked off one star because the background is a cool white and the description led me to believe that the would be more warm cream or light beige. (Cream bowl for comparison) I think that they will work in my room. Surface of the material is ever so slightly shiny and slippery, definitely a polyester feel.
