The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. With each piece of furniture handcrafted from responsibly-sourced northern white cedar, it is our most complete product line with pieces across room groups.

This is an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture. However, the chest came with damage to the hinge. My husband had to go out and buy new screws (because the original ones were too short) and bend the hinge back in shape before inserting the screws. Wayfair gave me a 20% discount because of the damage, which I consider good customer service. But there was another issue which I did not report to Wayfair because I was not aware of the issue at the time. The lid will not open all the way. The hinge is strong and the lid will stay open-but only about 3/4 of the way. I was able to get my stuff in the chest, but I have to bend down to the floor to get stuff out, but I have to pull it out at an angle instead of straight up. Again, my husband is going to try and adjust the hinges so that I can open it more. That said, the chest is gorgeous, but because of the hinge/lid issue-it is not worth the full asking price.. Overall, I like these a lot. I wanted something sturdy and basic in this room which houses my home office because I also have a lot of dumbbells and they were on a weight rack which I found to be somewhat unsightly. I had to deduct a star because I could not get the latches attached to the lid, no matter how hard I tried and the pre-drilled holes for the hinges were really not acceptable. In both of these chests, the middle pre-drilled hole was missing entirely. The others were just barely drilled and so I had to ask a friend to come over and help me get the screws fully screwed in.
