Great piece, I use it as an end table. The top of unit hinges open and I hide a subwoofer in there. The space measures approx 8” tall, 17.5” wide, and 16.5” deep. The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it.
