A mask built of layers seem to break open, revealing a living youth within. The wrinkled visage of an aged man frames him, and the outermost mask represent the dead. Working in ceramic, Zhane creates an enigmatic replica. The original piece is thought to belong to the Teotihuacan culture and is displayed in the Museum of San Ildefonso in Mexico City.

Zhane is inspired by the concept of duality in Aztec spirituality and art for the design of this mask. "Existential duality between life and death is at the root of all conflict within oneself, and in relationship with others. World Menagerie are born with both impulses, that of living and evolving, and that of dying," explains the Mexican artisan. Expert in pre-Hispanic art, the artisan crafts a ceramic mask in which the green side of the face symbolizes life, and the other represent a skull. An ornate headdress with serpents, an eagle, and two suns underscores the divine theme of this mask.

Goddess of fertility, mother of the stars, and grandmother of humanity, Coatlicue is the supreme and sacred embodiment of maternity in the Aztec world. Often known as the patron of those who die in childbirth, the deity is exquisitely depicted by the Angel Ceron Artisan Association in Mexico. The team uses ceramic and mineral dyes to portray Coatlicue in the same splendor the ancestral Aztec artisans once did, bringing this exquisite sculpture to life.

A skeletal figure, she stands with her hands raised in the posture of women who die in childbirth. Zhane sculpts the image of Coatlicue, "She of the serpent skirt." The Mexica earth goddess and mother of the gods, her image bears the symbol "Eight Malinalli, or "grass." Her son Huitzilopochtli, the sun god and god of war, defended her from the powers of the night. The artisan bathes the image in earth to give it the effect of a recent archeological discovery.

Zhane reveals the presence of Chalchiuhtlicue as he works with clay extracted from the state of Oaxaca. Officially authorized to replicate pre-Hispanic museum pieces, the artisan crafts a detailed statuette of this feminine deity, the female companion of Tlaloc, Aztec god of rain. The original is dated between 1325 and 1521 A.D. Chalchiuhtlicue is the goddess of lakes, rivers, fountains, seas and oceans, and thus the protector of sailors and is also known as "She with the Jade Skirt" symbolizing pure and crystalline running water. "Chalchiuhtlicue is usually depicted holding a staff representing lightning, and a bag of copal, where clouds are formed. She is revered as the female principle of life and patron of midwives and newborns," explains the artisan who though he has officially retired, he continues to pursue his life-long passion for pre-Hispanic art.

The sculpted bust of a jaguar warrior unearthed in Texcoco inspires Zhane in the creation of this sculpture. Ancient Aztecs believed the jaguar to be associated with the god of night, and to become a jaguar one had to capture at least four enemies. Jaguar warriors, or ocelopilli, were used to capture enemies to be sacrificed to the gods. They would wear jaguar fur and claws for they believed the items would make them stronger and braver. They fought with wooden swords studded with obsidian.

Seen in silhouette, a skull speaks, its words depicted as glyphs that flow from its mouth. Angel Cerón recreates a motif from the archeological site of Chichén Itzá in Yucatán. The image was depicted on the walls of the ball court, relating it with death and with the sacred ballgame. Chichén Itzá is a post classic Maya site with marked Toltec influence.

Clay reveals the intense features of Huehueteotl, the first god of the Aztecs. One of the most respected, he is the old god, the god of fire, the god that gave rise to the other deities in the pre-Hispanic pantheon. Fiercely loyal, brave and courageous, Aztec warriors were feared throughout most of pre-Hispanic Mexico. Fascinated by the legendary characters and their exploits,the artisan designs this unique mask in their honor. The mask is crafted of ceramic and painted by hand. It features a large headdress to signify social standing.

Artisan Luis Morales of Mexico crafts a charming ceramic Catrina to grace your mantel or shelf. Formed by hand from clay, her ensemble is carefully painted in red with white flowers and ruffles. Her hair is braided and she holds a magnificent platter. The elegant figure is based on a satirical etching created by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada around 1910-1913. With his etching, Posada poked fun at those Mexican natives who tried to emulate the fashion and habits of the European aristocracy. Today, la Catrina has become the instantly recognizable icon of Día de los Muertos (Mexico's Day of the Dead).

This is a handcrafted tribal-style mask with a striking combination of neutral tones, including shades of white, black, and natural wood. The mask showcases intricate carved details and an elongated face shape that exudes a sense of traditional craftsmanship and cultural symbolism.
