The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. We removed a stack washer/dryer from a space in our 1/2 bath. This cabinet fit perfect. Assembly was fairly easy, I did it myself, had to take a closer look at some instruction and thought “I hope I’m right”. All said and done I finished in a couple hours. Fits perfect, doesn’t feel extremely sturdy but we have it between a wall & another built-in. I think I would definitely secure it to the rear wall with the brackets supplied. I was very nervous when I ordered this because the description didn't specify whether it had the 12.5" or 7.5" opening. I needed the 7.5" opening to accommodate my Janome MB-4S embroidery machine, but the pictures showed both sizes. I took a lucky guess, and as you can see this is the one with the smaller opening that fits my 4-needle Janome machine perfectly. I'm a 73-year-old woman, and it took me most of a day to put this together by myself, with a bit of help from my husband to turn it over a couple of times.
