The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. The box set is very cute. However I only gave 4 stars as the boxes are much darker and more green than pictured. Luckily that works for me. They are small so be sure to review the measurements before purchase.
