Back surface of shelves is unfinished, so needs to be positioned against wall-- not freestanding between room spaces. The steadiness of the unit depends upon its weight-- otherwise, not very sturdy from side-to-side. Just what I was looking for in a real solid wood kitchen island on a budget! It fits our space & is a basic style for a good price. It is a soft wood (fir) so you do have to be gentle with it & it did come with some shipping/packaging character marks, but our style is rustic/vintage so it works just fine. I actually modified it by cutting off the bottom 2” on each leg & adding rollers so it is easily moveable by just one person. Fairly sturdy, solid pine. Casters are seriously heavy duty. I counted 18 pieces (not counting bolts and screws) for a pretty quick , simple assembly. My only problem was that despite paying close attention to recessed areas for pan-head screws, carefully studying the enclosed diagram and written instructions the final step in the illustration was pictured backwards.
