The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. There are a couple of things to be aware of: 1) Although easy to do, there are many pieces to assemble, so count on maybe 2-3 hours of time to fully assemble the desk, hutch and all of the drawers. 2) Given the type of coated particle board construction that is used, there were some small blemishes on corners/ends of a few of the pieces. I do like the desk. The assembly was not too difficult if you are accustomed to assembling furniture. I spread the assembly out over three days so I could take my time and not feel rushed. It would have been helpful if the “cabinet members” and “drawer runners” had been marked more clearly on each of the individual pieces. This desk is an excellent value at this price point. Pressed wood, but looks realistic enough. It’s quite solid and well made. It does take quite a bit of time to put together but I wouldn’t say it was hard. The directions had a lot of detail and were simple to follow. I put it together mostly alone over two days (desk one day, hutch the next). My only complaint is the picture on Wayfair is misleading in color. It is not a true grey as I had hoped.
