The seat part of the sofa is not hard but not soft. I would say medium to soft but this is understandable given it is a sofa bed and I am overall very impressed with its comfort. This chair is amazing. I needed a small sofa and did not have any futon-type item in mind at all, but when I saw that this could be manipulated in so many ways, I thought it would be pretty handy - and attractive - and it is! I have a big 'golden sammy' dog and NO dog hair clings to it! BIG WIN. I got the gray color and it looks very rich, soft, and inviting. It's so easy to click it down to take a nap - and you have the option of having armrests up or down or sloped - just like the back. It's hilarious!
