This classic depiction of the Commander of the Continental Army and First President of the United States, George Washington, shows the iconic founding father during the height of the American Revolution at his headquarters in Valley Forge, PA. Continental troops were suffering from bitterly cold conditions and a lack of necessary supplies, though their spirits remained high as they battled the British for freedom from colonial rule. Some 12,000 troops camped at Valley forge during the winter of 1777, and this tribute was painted in 1911 by noted American artist E. Percy Moran and remains an enduring symbol of early American history.Born in Philadelphia in 1862, Moran was the son of English immigrants who had come to the United States in the early nineteenth century. His father was also an artist and taught Moran at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. Moran became known for painting historical scenes, and this depiction of Washington remains one of his most famous pieces as it represents a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. Moran's classic style and aesthetic were very popular in the early twentieth century and tended to mirror his traditional subjects of early American history and pastoral landscapes. This remains one of the most paintings of Washington and his ability to inspire American troops throughout the Revolutionary War. The painting draws the viewer in and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. Moran frequently chose Washington as the subject of his work; this remains the most recognized piece.

This portrait of the president, called the Gibbs-Channing-Avery portrait, is one of eighteen similar works known as the Vaughan group. The first of this type, presumably painted from life and then copied in all the others, originally belonged to Samuel Vaughan, a merchant, and a close friend. This original portrait by Stuart, painted in 1795 according to Rembrandt Peale, was subsequently acquired by Joseph Harrison. While in Harrison's collection, Rembrandt Peale copied it many times. The version now in the metropolitan museum of art, considered to be one of the earliest and best replicas, was sold to Stuart's close friend, Colonel George Gibbs, and subsequently descended in the Gibbs family. Based on his earlier work, known as the Athenaeum Portrait, this lithographic print by Gilbert Stuart remains one of the most iconic and enduring images of America's first president George Washington. It would later be used as a reference for the image of the $1 bill. Stuart produced numerous editions of the print that would go on to represent the legacy and significance of Washington's impact on the development of the United States in the years following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. This print was produced by Pendleton Lithography, a Boston-based firm that was prolific during its short time in business. This print represents the expansion of early American presidential history and immediately transports the viewer back in time, linking them to the heritage and importance of these formative years. The tradition of official presidential portraits remains one of the most culturally essential pieces of former leaders' legacies. While the Athenaeum Portrait was never completed, Stuart completed this illustration. However, the exact date of completion remains in question, with most historical scholars attributing it to a period between 1825 and 1828.Washington remains one of America's most influential political figures and helped guide the nation in its earliest phases, establishing some historical precedents, including two-term presidencies. Washington was born in Colonial Virginia and was an influential leader in the years leading up to the revolution. Washington was among the founding fathers to author the Constitution and became a vocal opponent of British colonial rule in North America in the eighteenth century.

This Bedspread is absolutely gorgeous. I love the oversized feature. I love that it is light, if more cover is needed will use a blanket or quilt. It looks great on my antique bed. The only thing—it had a “plastic smell” when I removed it from the packaging. I let it air out for over 24 hours and now it is fine. Not a deal breaker—I am very happy with this item.. Jlele.
