The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This is a super cute desk, even nicer than I expected. The wood grain finish makes the black look so special and unique. It seems really sturdy, except for the sliding doors, they might not hold up to heavy use. It’s ok, though because I will still be able to use the shelves. It wasn’t the easiest to assemble, I wish I could take away a half star for the unclear instructions.
