When I opened it there was no odor coming from the pad. I didn't have to cut it which was nice. After vacuuming both carpets I placed the pad between the carpet and the area rug. I had to look up how to put the pad - felt side down toward the carpet and rubber side against the area rug. A quick set-up sheet would have saved me some time and effort. The pad has added some cushion which makes it nicer to walk on. As for the traveling area rug, it has slowed down and only moves a centimeter or so a day. This is a nice rug but it looks terrible in my room so I'm returning it. That's my fault not the rug. The colors are really nice and the rug looks good and has a great feel. It is a bit orangier than I was picturing. Also this rug is a lot thicker than I thought it would be so if you're using it near a door be careful.
