The skill of the artisans who created it is evident, not only in how the broken areas are so convincing but in the aged-beige finish that fools the eye into thinking it is carved from stone. The Villa Greek key urn is a true embodiment of Italian craftsmanship. Artisans employ the age-old technique of hand-packing clay into a mold through a process known as calco. Each mold is left to dry for 2-3 days, during which the clay naturally shrinks, making it easy to remove the mold. Following this, the urn undergoes firing in a kiln at 950 degrees, and a second firing ensues, adding a white glaze finish. George Sellers created Athena by hand carving it from clay; a plaster casting was then sent to Italy for production in ceramic. The original, thought to be from the 4th century BC, is on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. Athena was the Greek goddess of many things: wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Minerva is the Roman goddess equivalent of Athena. The Greek city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the same name. Our goddess is made from terracotta-based ceramic, formulated in a method the Italians refer to, the act of packing a perfectly produced mold with terracotta clay. Once allowed to dry it is pulled away from the mold and transferred to a kiln where it's fired at 950 degrees, then fired for a 2nd time after being glazed in our signature antique white glaze.
