We love this island! I was a little skeptical ordering online and not being able to see it in person. The island is exactly as described. My cabinets are sarsaparilla color and Ive had trouble finding a color to match it that would have clashed (cherry colored or white). This antique black is perfect and the counter top matches the color of our dining room table and some colors in our counter. It took about 1 hour to put together by myself. Glad I waited for this one to exist! Many years ago, I had a kitchen cart and when we had our countertops redone, I had a piece of the granite cut for that particular cart. As the years went on, we replaced the cart with another piece of kitchen furniture and put the piece of granite away. After some renovation to our house, we realized we had room again for a kitchen cart but now my tastes were a little bit more sophisticated and I wanted something that was really beautiful and that would match the aesthetics of the kitchen. It took a while to find this one because I needed two things, this cart had to be very sturdy in order to withstand the weight of the piece of granite, and it needed to be of a size that the granite would overhang, but only a little bit. I am so pleased to say that sometimes I just a glance to admire this cart and how beautiful it is. In preparing this review, I just was reminded that it has drawers! Maybe I’ll use them now that I found them. They open up quite far, which is actually very very nice. The shelves are great, although we haven’t used them yet. I found this very easy to put together and of course I did remove the top that it comes with to place my piece of granite on top. Very classy design, heavy and sturdy with eye-catching detail and impressive proportions. This was a significant purchase for my new home, and it looks like it was made just for my kitchen. But I am not $1,500 worth of happy... I would put my happiness rating at about $900. But I paid over $1,500 and I have some issues with this item. Mostly, the paint and overall finish on the legs and frame it not what I expected. The little bare detail spots are very rough and not sanded smooth so they will snag clothing if you brush up against it. And the wood used for the legs is heavy but also can be dented quite easily (which happened during assembly using a hand tool). But the real kicker for me is the paint job... for this much money it just doesn't seem to be "finished." You can scratch it off with a fingernail. With 3 small dogs in my house this is a potential problem. Add to that, the paint was not sealed in any way- and John Boos SELLS a poly coat product! I guess John Boos wants me to spend another $30.... and apply it myself. Which would have been easier before I assembled it. Now that it's put together, it will be a difficult job. Very sturdy and well made. other reviews state that the leaf is sagging etc....well the hardware holding it up is pretty beefy, and there are instructions included for if you need to tightenlevel the leaf. also the other review stating the drawer and leaf should be on the same side...well thats not physically possible, they would get in the way of one another. they included a package of wood seasoning to get you started as well.
