Rooted in the French Aubusson Savonnerie tradition this hand knotted wool rug works entirely within a warm gold and cream palette that gives it a richness and cohesion uncommon in rugs of this style. A deep mustard gold field centers on an oval medallion surrounded by scrolling floral and botanical forms in tonal gold and cream all rendered in the sculptural raised manner that the Savonnerie pile tradition developed in the royal French workshops of the 17th century where carving and pile variation were used to give the design a three-dimensional quality. That sculptural quality is very much present here with the floral and leafwork forms in the field and border sitting in relief against the ground in a way that adds depth to what is already a tonally rich composition. A cream border carries a continuous floral arrangement in the same gold and mustard tones dense enough to frame the field with presence while keeping the palette consistent from edge to edge. The plush wool pile on a cotton foundation gives the rug a substantial feel underfoot and the depth of the pile works particularly well with the tonal palette by allowing the gold tones to shift and vary across the surface depending on the light.Story Behind the Art: French needlepoint rugs originated in 17th18th century France famously crafted in Aubusson and Savonnerie workshops for royal and aristocratic interiors. Featuring floral medallions and elegant scrollwork they were hand-stitched onto canvas using fine petit and gros point techniques. These rugs were heavily influenced by classical European art featuring floral medallions scrollwork garlands and pastel palettes. They were often used in palaces chteaux and salons woven with meticulous craftsmanship using the petit point and gros point techniques. By the late 20th century China became a major producer of French-style needlepoint rugs. Using centuries-old weaving and embroidery skills Chinese artisans began replicating Aubusson and Savonnerie designs on a global scale. These rugs are hand-stitched or handwoven often using wool on cotton canvas and maintain the look of antique French originals at more accessible price points.

I can’t believe I paid $1000 for this thing. It’s so THIN, I can see DAYLIGHT through parts of it. Furthermore, it looks way more colorful in the picture than on the rug. It’s all different colors of brown and beige, with next to no pastel color AT ALL!!! So beautiful on the website. Too bad the carpet looks almost nothing like it.. Sally. Cutchogue, NY.
