Just the right size for me for my purposes - and the pieces are detailed and not "rough" looking carvings - which are not to my tastes - they are plastic but look very much like ivory (the cream colored) and wooden (the brown ones). They do have some magnetism - and they are clear for a beginner since the tallest is the king, and so forth - as it seems standard regulation chess pieces to orient a beginner are best to do.
