Most people who want a fireplace do not have a chimney. They have a rental, a bedroom, a studio, or a living room where the sofa already takes up the wall. This is for them. At 23 inches it fits where a real fireplace never could, and it still does the thing you actually wanted: a bed of logs with embers glowing underneath, and a flame that moves the way a real fire does. Stand it in an old fireplace opening, or against a bare wall. Plug in the 120V cord. Press a button. The remote runs everything. Three brightness levels take you from the dim glow you want during a film to the brighter fire you want at a holiday dinner, without getting up. And the flame holds one warm, steady color, which is what a real fire does. It is not trying to be a light show. The flame and the heater sit on separate switches, which matters more than it sounds. In July you get the fire with none of the heat. In December you get 750W to take the edge off a mild evening, or 1500W to genuinely warm a bedroom, a study or a small living room. It runs without the drone that forces you to raise your voice, so the conversation and the film stay out front. The unit is freestanding, 23 inches across and about 16 lb, with a black steel body and a painted finish that reads traditional rather than modern. Easy to move, easy to reposition, easy to live with. If you move flats, it moves with you.And it never needs feeding. No splitting, no ash, no cleaning, no chimney sweep, no waiting for it to catch. Just the part of a fireplace people actually wanted.
