This beam is constructed out of ¾” thick Aspen wood and is 6 1/2" tall. You choose the length and depth. Each piece of wood is unique and will have more or less character/knots than the other. It is designed to look like a solid beam without weight. The distressed beams are painted either black or white and have the edges sanded over and a brown stain/wax applied for a distressed look. The distressed beams will not be a solid color. Easy to install utilizing a French cleat mounting bracket which is included. Screws are not included. You will need to purchase 3" screws for the application you will be attaching the bracket to. Wood is considered a combustible material. Heat clearances must be adhered to. If installing over a fireplace, check your local building codes and the manufacturer's instructions for your specific fireplace insert or stove.

This reclaimed wood floating wall shelf adds a rustic touch to kitchens, entryways and home offices. I was concerned about the weight of this floating shelf. It seemed strange to mount something so heavy to a wall since most of the items I will display on it won't weigh as much as the shelf on its own. There is a metal mounting bracket that you at first mount on the wall using the included screws. I had to screw holes in this bracket to match the width of the studs in the wall I planned to mount it to. Once the bracket was mounted on the wall, the shelf slides onto the lip easily. I am using this shelf as a makeshift mantel. The shelf is quite heavy and it feels like petrified wood. Overall it is a very attractive shelf and makes for an attractive fireplace mantel.. Richard. We do not add to or take away from any of the natural distressing that has occurred from decades of use. You will see nail holes, screw holes, nails, discoloration, scratches, dents, and many other variations. Each of these markings is a glimpse into the history of your shelves. You may see holes from a mortise and tenon joint or other time-honored wood joining techniques. You may notice where a hinge or hook is used to hang. This beam is constructed out of ¾” thick Aspen wood and is 6 1/2" tall. You choose the length and depth. Each piece of wood is unique and will have more or less character/knots than the other. It is designed to look like a solid beam without weight. The distressed beams are painted either black or white and have the edges sanded over and a brown stain/wax applied for a distressed look. The distressed beams will not be a solid color. Easy to install utilizing a French cleat mounting bracket which is included. Screws are not included. You will need to purchase 3" screws for the application you will be attaching the bracket. Corbels will increase the total height of the beam to 13". The corbels have been pre-drilled and include screws. You will need to attach the corbels to the beam upon receipt. Wood is considered a combustible material. Heat clearances must be adhered to. If installing over a fireplace, check your local building codes and the manufacturer's instructions for your specific fireplace insert or stove.

The shelves are solid wood, but not a single piece of solid wood. Rather, each shelf in the shelf set I received has two pieces of wood glued together.
