The seat part of the sofa is not hard but not soft. I would say medium to soft but this is understandable given it is a sofa bed and I am overall very impressed with its comfort. This is an elegant, firm sofa that was easy to assemble solo, and this is not something I usually do. I did have a friend help me flip it up onto its legs after assembly. The box arrived really beat up, and I had misgivings as I was unwrapping, but the contents were protected. I have now had this sofa for over a year; I slept on it for three months while fostered cats and kittens took over my bedroom. It would work to use it as a daily bed, but it is VERY firm. The blue velvet fabric has held up nicely despite 2 cats (who fortunately, do not scratch it). I have received many compliments on it; it is the focal point of the sitting area. I purchased this sleep sofa for my family room. If I need an extra sleep space for guests, this is what I selected. My number 1 reason for selecting this sofa is because it’s from Stearns Foster. I already own a mattress from them and have been extremely satisfied with the quality and comfort. I purposely sought out Stearns Foster to see if they even offered sleep sofas. I was pleased to see they did and also the mattress is more substantial at 8” thick versus many that are much thinner. The seating is firmer than many standard sofas, but that is to be expected when there is a mattress tucked into the sofa. Positively IN LOVE with these sofas! Firm enough for me, soft enough for my husband. They had the look I wanted which no local store seemed to carry, totally washable which is a must with large dogs so I took a chance- and oh am I glad I did. After trying out this Sleep Sofa at the Lazy Boy store, I was happy to see it offered by Wayfair. Although Wayfair doesn’t allow you to customize fabric selection, I was fine with the neutral color it came in. This “mini sectional” is adjustable for left or right chaise. It wasn’t as firm as I remembered from the showroom, but, that could be due to the difference in fabrics. Delivery was fantastic- they brought it in, setup and removed the debris promptly.
