Droll Yankees Metal Feeder

The Woodlink seed tube feeder with a cage is a wonderful mixed seed feeder with a 1.5-inch caged grid around the exterior. The grid is powder-coated metal allowing for birds to slip through easily and protect them from predators. The feeder can hold 1.25 lbs. of birdseed. The tube itself is made from durable ABS plastic and features 4 different feeding stations. Many of your favorite songbirds can slip in but larger birds like doves, bluejays, and grackles will have to find another place to feed.

Received as described. We have one resident chickadee that is so picky, it throws a few sunflower seeds out before choosing the one, and flies off with its choice. We installed a frisbee under the bird feeder to catch the chickadee's rejects, and the finches happily eat from the frisbee because their motto is "waste not, want not." This is a really cute and unique bird feeder, and I’m excited to see how the birds take to it. We put peanut butter in the jar at the top and hung it outside, although we haven’t had a chance yet to see birds actually using it. The main reason I’m taking off one star is the assembly. The small plastic clips that connect the upper and lower sections of the metal cage were extremely difficult to get into place. They honestly seemed a little too small for the metal pieces they needed to snap around. My husband had already tried putting it together on his own and wasn’t able to get them attached, and when we worked on it together later, it still took us probably 20 minutes of pushing, adjusting, and fiddling with the clips before we finally got everything secured. It was definitely more frustrating than it should have been. Once assembled, though, I really like the design. The metal cage feels sturdy, the peanut butter holder is a fun idea, and I like that the cage is intended to allow smaller birds access while discouraging squirrels and larger birds. I bought this feeder because of its large seed holding capacity and also because the feeding ports are only located at the bottom, rather than at multiple heights like most feeders, so I don't have to fill it daily. The top is easy to slide up for ease of filling. I like that the individual perches are spring-loaded to close port access if a weighty rodent (we have large wood rat problems, not squirrel problems) gets onto the perch. Previously, I had a squirrel-proof feeder that had one continuous perch wrapped around the bottom, which allowed many birds to feed, but the issue with that was, so many birds could fit on it, that it would actually get weighed down, triggering the spring-loaded port closure, so the birds couldn't feed. I was so happy to have found this one with individual spring-loaded perches! It's a good quality feeder. I was concerned about whether the birds would accept this based on the reviews but there are dozen of the flitting around it as I write this. I did deduct a star because the metal is a much thinner gauge than my previous brand name one (which needed replacing because a bear destroyed it- never had bears here before). The old one had already survived having a small tree fall on it. This one would not withstand that. The lid already had a dent when it arrived and I could easily bend the metal with my bare hands. The finish is a sprayed on paint, not a more durable powder coated finish so it will likely rust pretty quickly. I didnt want the hassle of a return so I kept it.
